One Question was written by Ken Coleman. He is a radio host and Emcee of the catalyst leadership conference. He is all about the questions. He is an acclaimed author and a speaker. Through the years, he has gained widespread notoriety for his in-depth conversations with leaders from all walks of life. As you can see, the punchline of the book is life changing answers from today’s leading voice. I got to know Ken Coleman from a Zig Ziglar podcast. Ken Coleman interviewed by Tom Ziglar and Kevin Miller. He shared a great story from his mentor. He talks about finding your sweet spot. So what is your sweet spot? List down your strength on one side and the list down your passion on the other side. Strength is what you are good at and it is basically your skills. Passion is the things you love to do without feeling burden. Your sweet spot is the intersection of these two functions.
At that point, I know I need to know this guy, Ken Coleman. I need to get his book, One Question. Let us begin.

One Question is a collection of the interview done by Ken Colemen to highly influential and great people around the globe. The chapters of the book consist of three main categories. They are the three S’s, Succeeding, Surviving and finally Sustaining. The moment you opened the book, the first question is “WHY ASK QUESTION?” Albert Einstein once said, “To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks a real advance in science.” Great questions are often the keys that unlock possibilities for human advancement. Asking questions to the right person, at the right time in the right way and magic happen.
Ken Colemen interviewed people like John Maxwell, Seth Godin, John McCain, Malcome Gladwell, Dave Ramsey, and the list goes on. The book is full of compressed life nugget and advice which can be used as a catalyst to succeed in life, to survive in life and the finally sustain. This very much reflects the cycle of life. At one point in life, you need to survive. Once you succeed, the next journey is the hardest element which is to sustain. Why I say so? Once you are are the top, you may not be comfortable to downgrade yourself. Let’s keep it simple, you were using the iPhone 7 for 2 years, are you willing to use iPhone 3? You may feel uncomfortable using it. You may feel downgraded. You may feel undervalued. Sometimes you have to be beaten down to learn the meaning of success and to understand the importance of sustaining.
Ken Colemen simplified and frames the experience from the interview into these section of life. I just love it. Alright, let us look at the three key lesson from The One Question. I took one from each key categories.
My three key lessons from the book
Once we locate our niche, we need the courage and discipline to pursue it. If you find and fill your niche, you’ll never “work” another day in your life.
This is taken under the category of SUCCEEDING. Ken had an interview with John Maxwell about NICHE. He is a New York Times Best Selling Author. Ken asked John, We all have unique talents and strengths, yet so many never find their niches. How do we find it? John Maxwell stated that you need to answer two questions. One is “What are you passionate about?” and number two is “What are you good at?” To answer these questions, you got of self-discover yourself through the elimination process. Start off with your passion. Do you like basketball? Do you like engineering? Do you like to photography?
Once you know that, you need to find out whether you are good at it or even skill at it. You can look at it as your strength. Keep in mind that you will not be good at it at first and you are expected to make mistakes. It is similar when a baby learning to walk. She needs to crawl, walk, run and dance. It takes multiple failures to earn the success. Once you got these two, all you need to do it go all in with discipline and courage!
Your successes and failures in the laboratory of life have left you with experience rather than mere theory.
Under the category of SURVIVING, Ken interviewed Dave Ramsey about STARTING OVER. He is a Nationally Syndicated Radio Host and New York Times Bestselling Author. Ken asked Dave, “How do people recover when they fail and have to start again?” Dave responded, starting over is a form of “SPLAT” and it is part of our life. It is considered a given situation. First, you have to recognize that when you’re flat on your back, there is nowhere to look but up! It means you can decide to get up. The next thing is clear the fog in your head as you see your goal. To move forward, you recognize your values and principles, and from that point forward, they seared into your souls and never change. This is an important step because principles are the foundation that makes great men and great women. Finally, you need to established your core value. Then, you can start dreaming again and see your vision of success.
Splats is an opportunity to reassess our priorities. Success and stress blur the lines between the important and the immediate. Hence, a splat in our life allows us to focus on what is really important for us. It helps us to reset. Remember, your successes and failures in the laboratory of life have left you with experience rather than mere theory.

Under the category of SUSTAINING, Ken interviewed Denise Austin about HEALTH. She is a Fitness Icon and New York Times Bestselling Author. Ken asked Denise, Most people know that health is important, yet many can’t seem to squeeze exercise and proper nutrition into their busy schedules. How much more effective would we be in chasing our dream if we were better in physical health? Denise response, It makes a huge difference in the sense of energy and positive feeling with our jobs, relationship and family. You could have all the money in the world, but if you don’t have good health, you have nothing! Most people are not lazy, but they just do not know how to start. You do not have to be a hardcore athlete representing the country for a sports event. It could be a quick 30 to 45 minutes jog or walk every day consistently. Most people also only start to live a healthy lifestyle after they were diagnosed with diseases such as heart attack, diabetes, and even cancer. By that time, it could be too late. All this could be prevented with the investment and commitment to exercise and eat healthily.
