I shared the great experiences and my toughest obstacles from the Spartan Race Sprint. You can read more at the following link;

I would love to share my top three favourite Spartan Race Obstacle during the Spartan Race Sprint, Malaysia. I will include what did I do to train to prepare myself to conquer the obstacles.

1. Bucket Carry aka. Bucket Brigade.

Not many people will like this obstacle. But I do! Being a powerlifter, this obstacle is a big advantage for me to overtake other racers who was ahead of me. There was a change done by the Spartan Race organizers this time. They already fill for us the bucket and cover it with a cap. This is a good initiative to avoid some racer from cheating. Keep in mind this is a mandatory obstacle. There is no burpee, but only doing the obstacles. Please make it right for the first time. If not, you got to re-do the obstacle.

What is my recommended workout will help you to conquer the bucket brigade? I would recommend deadlift, farmers walk and of course, you can get a bucket and fill in the weights and start walking. For me, I would prefer deadlift. Why? The bucket brigade will test strength and endurance of your lower back, core and your forearm strength. High repetition deadlift will help to strengthen your back and core. Then, get a bucket fill it with rock, find a hill and start walking. Let’s conquer The Bucket Carry together.

2. Rope Climb

My second favourite obstacle is the rope climb. Why I like it,  I use to have that mindset that I cannot climb up the rope because I am heavy. That is 90kg heavy. Then, I learn the right technique of climbing the rope. It is all about the feet. You can use the J-hook technique or the S-hook technique. I always use the J-hook.  The right technique will improve the efficiency of climbing the rope. No more burpees from the rope climb for me! Thanks to the SPARTAN SLIT FIT FOUR GLOVES, too. I got zero ripped calluses from the rope climb and it helps to enhance my grip strength on my palm.

What is my recommended workout will help you to conquer the rope climb? I work on narrow pull-ups, toes to bars, and the rope climbing itself. We just have to keep practising the right techniques, and more repetition on the rope climb. Check out the video below for the Rope Climb Tutorial from a Spartan Racer elite. Let’s conquer The Rope Climb together.

3. Sandbag Carry

I just love the Sandbag Carry. I even bought one for myself. I bought the 60lb sandbag. During the Spartan Sprint, we had to walk down to a valley and way back up. I believe it was about a distance of 800m. It was a hard terrain, some Spartans slipped and sprain their ankle while running with the sandbag. This obstacle was an advantage for me as it was strength dominant obstacle. I managed to overtake other racers while running with the sandbag. Similar to the bucket carry, it was a mandatory obstacle. There are no burpees for this, but only doing the obstacles.

Sandbag Carry training

What is my recommended workout will help you to conquer the sandbag carry? I do squats, farmers walks and the sandbag carry itself. Sandbag carry will test the strength and endurance of your lower back, upper back and your core. So, it is best to strengthen that part of your body. You can even make your own sandbag with the right weights. Then, start running with it. Check out the video below for the Sandbag Tutorial from a Spartan Racer elite. Let’s conquer The Sandbag together.

  1. You just named some of my least favorite obstacles! The sandbag broke me at the San Jose Spartan in California (going up a super steep hill), I pulled a muscle on the bucket brigade (it was pouring rain and I did the splits while carrying my bucket!), and rope climb…well rope climb is okay.

    I personally prefer the climbing obstacles, but to each there own.

    However, I do have to add, this is why we sign up for Spartans, to push ourselves!
