#5 Minutes Truth: GRIT is what makes you get up after you fall down!

GRIT is a personality trait on an individual who lives up to their passion and perseverance moving toward a goal despite being pushed down by significant obstacles and distractions. The field of psychology GRIT may include “hardiness”, “resilience”, “ambition”, “need for achievement” and “hunger for success”.

GRIT is what makes you get up after you fall down. GRIT is the awareness of achieving greatest potential comes from running a marathon, not a sprint. A better analogy is an obstacles race such as The Spartan Race.

Cultivating a GRIT personality is not an easy task as one may initially believe. Especially, in the society fueled by instant gratification nowadays.  People nowadays desire rewards fast and immediately. When we post a picture on Instagram, we expect to see the number of heart increase. Yes, it feels good. But it is only temporary feeling. Living life with GRIT must be able live life with delay gratification. It will be tough, however, it will be worth it. There is a saying, it takes 10 years to achieve an overnight success.

Here are my top three quotes on GRIT! Be GRITTY and stay GRITTY!

6 Pillars of Life Fulfilment

In life, there is always an up and down moment. It is like the electrocardiograph (ECG) reading that measure your heart’s electrical activity. If there is up and down,  it is a sign of life. You are alive! If it is a flat straight line, it is a sign of death. You are actually dead! It is the up and down moment that gives a meaning of life. It is death that gives life worth living. The key word is life fulfilment.

ECG Line for life fulfilment.jpg

I asked myself, “What does fulfilment mean to me? I believe the definition of Fulfilment will be different to different people. To me, fulfilment is the feeling of completeness, of achieving your goal and connect to your why.  I had to be in the moment of silence to frame on what does fulfilment means to me. It takes some time as well. I came up with the 6 Pillars of Life Fulfilment.

They are two types of people running the race. They are people who focus on the obstacles. They are people who focus on the finish line. Which one are you? The statement also similar when we live life.

They are two types of people in life. They are people who focus on the adversity. They are people who focus on the goal. Which one are you?

Let’s be practical. Setting goals seem easy. You write the plan of your goal nicely on a piece of paper or in your goal book.  After that, you leave it aside. Over a period of time, you tend to forget about it.  Here is the hard truth, the plan will not be materialized without execution.  Execution can be the main struggle. It is about getting things done and it takes the enormous amount of patience. The goal is to reach the finish line! Here are the 5 simple ways to focus on your finish line.

Make your goal VISIBLE

Our mind works well visually. What you can do is to make GOAL VISUAL BOARD and put your board in your room. It can be in a form of a whiteboard, chalkboard and pinboard. You can write your goal on your board.  You can stick pictures on it. You can do whatever you want on the board and put a deadline on your board. It must be very clear. Remember, clarity is power. You put Every day you wake up you will look at your GOAL VISUAL BOARD. You can look at it again at night and audit yourself.

Goal Visual Board

Break down your goal into a LIST

You cannot swallow your whole meal in one go. You have to take one bite at a time and you can enjoy your meal. It is the same strategy when you are trying to achieve your goal. A massive goal is very overwhelming. It will cause you to lose confidence and motivation. The smart thing to do is to break down your massive goal into the actionable list. It has to be a specific and achievable task which you can do daily. It must practical and doable.  For each task completed, you will feel a confidence boost as you realise that you are one step closer to your goal. This makes reaching your ultimate goal that much easier.

For each task being checked, you will feel confidence boost as you realise that you are one step closer to your goal. Similar when you enjoy your meal one bite at a time, you can enjoy the process and the hustle to achieve your goal. That is how you can maintain your momentum and fire!

Action List

SHARE your goal with your friends or family

If your goal it not personal in nature, it is good to share with your friend and family. He or she will make you accountable. I am sure they are the ones you value to most. When they know your goal, they will have the expectation for you to achieve it. They will encourage you when you hit a wall. They will celebrate your success which will motivate you even more. Hence, this will help you to focus on your goal.

Accountability Buddy

Use positive WORD

There is a saying; “Words are Sharper than the two-edged sword” This is unbelievably true. What do you say about yourself will program your well-being in our mind and our soul.  When you say “I CAN”, it opens the door of possibility.  When you say ” I CAN’T”, it close the door of possibility.  Use positive word to describe your goal. By doing so, it programs your mind that it is achievable. It does not have to be some sophisticated sentence. Make it simple, yet impactful such as;

Positive word

AUDIT yourself

“Review your goals twice every day in order to be focused on achieving them.” by Les Brown

In other words, audit yourself. It is a very important step in your goal hunting journey.  It requires an enormous amount of self-awareness and brutally honest with yourself.  It will help you adjust your journey if you sidetrack from your destination. It will help you to keep track whether you are closer to your goal or not.  What can you do is get a book and write down your progress. You can use apps to help you as well.  However, I believe an old traditional book works best for me rather than apps. It helps me to focus with zero distraction.  Start with question like the following;

  1. Am I on track?
  2. What did I do well today that allows me to achieve my goal?
  3. What did not I do well today that cause me to sidetrack from my goal?
  4. What can I learn from my shortcomings?
  5. How can I change that?

Here comes the power question,

  1. What are the rewards if I achieve my goal?
  2. What are the punishments if I did not achieve my goal?

Be very self-aware and be very honest with yourself. The best place to audit yourself is in front of your GOAL VISUAL BOARD. Ask yourself the questions above and make it a habit. You have to learn to face the painful truth rather than the beautiful lie.

Audit Yourself

Let us break it down.

Let’s do the work! See you at your finish line!

#5 Minutes Truth: Being self-aware is the key to accepting mistakes. It is the first step to learning. Then, only we can correct them

Self Awareness or self-assessment is about knowing yourself.  It means having a crystal clear view of yourself. You know what is your strengths and weaknesses. You need to be brutally honest with yourself and acknowledge it!  You need to admit your strength and also admit your weakness. It can be a battle between who you think you are or who you ACTUALLY are? Honestly is key! Be ready to face the painful truth, rather than a beautiful lie. What’s work for others may now work for you!

Once you know who you are with great depth and breath, self-awareness allows you to understand other people and the ways they perceive you.  You understand their attitude toward you. With that in place, you are able to respond instead or reaction which allows you to make a great decision! BE SELF-AWARE!

Here are my top 3 quotes on self-awareness!

“Self Awareness isn`t just betting on your strengths, but accepting your shortcomings” by Gary Vaynerchuk

“Self-awareness is our capacity to stand apart from ourselves and examine our thinking, our motives, our history, our scripts, our actions, and our habits and tendencies.” by Stephen Covey

“Being self-aware is the key to accepting mistakes. It is the first step to learning.  Then, only we can correct them.” by MarvinInspire

The moment you write your goal on a piece of paper, you just only took the first step. For you to take the second steps and to continue until you reach your goals is by taking action. Execution is the key to success!

People love the feeling of being motivated, they don`t like to put in the work do something about the feeling. ~ Gary Vaynerchuk

Here are 3 key points you need to remember to make sure you execute! You just need to do it!!

1. Plan.Do.Check.Adjust.

You need to PLAN your big goal backward by breaking it down into smaller goals. Write or draw the map out the goal that you want to achieve, up to where you are today! Your big goal could be a one year to five years’ time. Then, break it down to yearly, quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily. Write down a simplified to do list daily, which can be done within your 24 hours in a day. Remember to keep track on it! DO the listed task everyday and make it a habit!

The fastest way to success is to replace bad habits with good habits. ~ Tom Ziglar

Every night before you go to bed, spend 10 minutes to CHECK where you are on the list. Ask yourself, “What did I do well?”, “What I did not do well?”, “What can I learn from my shortcomings?” and “How can I change that?”. Be honest with yourself when you are answering these questions. Self-Awareness is the KEY! You have to be flexible to ADJUST your daily tasks to achieve your goal. Then, you need to PLAN for the next day. The cycle continues with persistence until you reach your goal.  In a month, perform a major CHECK and ADJUSTMENT on where you are in your journey to achieve your goal.

2. Visualised the reward and the punishment.

Here is the story, imagine there is a 10 million dollar put in front of you. What you need to do is to run towards it. Once you grab that 10 million dollar, it is all yours and you will be super rich! Imagine you are in the jungle and a hungry lion is chasing to hunt and eat you. What you need to do is to run towards a building that keeps you safe and alive. Between these two stories, which do you think will run faster? I believe most of you will say the second story. You need to run for your life.

However, I think you will run faster if you see both! Let the lion chase you and put the 10 million dollars in front of you. You will run even faster! The reward is being wealthy with 10 million dollars and the punishment being dead. Here is the punchline, visualized the reward when you achieved your goal and visualized the punishment when you fail to achieve your goal.

Always start with questions. “What is the reward or benefit if I achieve my goal?” and “What is the punishment or the pain if I DON`T achieve my goal?” Visualised it for every goal that written down. Visualised the reward and visualised the punishment!

3. Get an accountability partner.

Human, as typical as it sounds, is made imperfect. We have that tendency to deviate from the desired goal over a period of time. When I was 12 years all, my parents was my accountability partner. They make sure I get good results in school. They tracked my academic performance. As we move into adulthood, your parents may not be there to keep track of what you are doing all the time. Hence, you need people around you to help you. Especially, those who are already successful!

An accountability partner takes on the role as trusted confident or a mentor whom you trust and who can provide you with the guidance and motivation to move forward. We need them in different areas of life. Some of them possess skills in certain areas which you may need to achieve your goal.  They are your important resources whom you can trust, and who genuinely wants to help you. They are not afraid to say, “Why do you have that goal?”, “You`re doing the wrong thing because I did this before. This is what you should do?”, “How is your goal progress?”, “How do you feel about it?”, “You did great! Keep it up?” and they will help you to visualize the reward and the punishment,

Let’s recap, the first one is to Plan.Do.Check.Adjust. Secondly, visualised the reward the punishment. Visualized if you achieve your goal and visualized if you fail to achieve your goal. Most importantly, get a trusted accountability partner to help to in your journey. Wishing you all the best!  Remember, execution is the key!!

Ideas are worthless, execution is the game! ~ Gary Vaynerchuk

The words are the most powerful tools that created by man!

If you talk negatively, it will hurt you, it will discourage you, and it will weaken you. If you talk positively, it will heal you, it will encourage you, and it will strengthen you. Your word will be made flesh.  That is why you need to choose the right word to speak.

Here are 5 ways to help you to choose your words wisely:

1. Speak with the end in mind!

The famous Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective people. His second habit is  Begin With The End In Mind. It is about knowing who you want to be by visualized it clearly. It starts with the mental creation and the next thing is the physical creation of what you visualized. This is where the right use of the word is significant as it is a form of communication. By doing so, it allows you to develop a conversation that moves you toward your desired goal.

When you want to speak and voice out your opinion, identify your desired goal. You need to ask yourself; “What am I trying to achieve?” before entering the conversation. Once you know what you want, choose your words and sentences that will inspire the desired result.

Tips: Ask yourself, “What am I trying to achieve?” before you speak in every single conversation!

2. Feed your mind with positivity!

Zig Ziglar famous quote, “You are what you are and you are where you are because of what has gone into your mind. You change what you are and you change where you are by changing what goes into your mind” You have to take action to feed your minds with positivity! There are two ways to do this.

First, you should is to invest 15 to 30 minutes in a day for every day of your life to fill your mind with positivity. You can read, listen, watch and one of my favorite one share to your friends.  Pick up a book on personal development. I highly recommend Over the Top by Zig Ziglar. Listen to audiobook or podcast. There is multiple choice of audio to choose! At the moment, I am listening to The Secret to Success by Dr. Eric Thomas and The GaryVee Audio Experience. If you like visual, hit the search button on YouTube! One of my favorite youtube channels is Goal Cast and Team Fearless! Please check them out!  Then, you need to share it with a friend and have the discussion on the positive thought and idea. This will reinforce and burn on your mind.

The second method is to have self-talk. Self-talk can have a great impact on your well-being as a person. It can be positive or negative and have different effects on how you feel. This is my self-talk card. It is from the book Over the Top by Zig Ziglar. Again, spend some time to read the self-talk card DAILY!  It will change your program your mind.

 Self Talk by Zig.JPG

Tips: Start your day every morning reading out loud the self-talk card. It takes only less than 5 minutes and you got 1440 minutes in a day.

3. Practice the Pause!

One of my favorite taglines, Boys react. Men respond. I got this from the Dr. Eric Thomas. It required an enormous amount of self-awareness, especially on your emotional intelligence. When you got angry, sad, depressed, stress and in doubt, take a deep deep breath and pause for 5 seconds. Begin asking yourself, “What am I trying to achieve?”, “What is the right thing to say?” or “What is the right thing to do?” By asking the question, it allows you to look at the situation objectively. Believe me, when you speak with an imbalance emotion you will regret it. Most of the time, the words that you voiced out can never be taken back.  Practice the pause with a deep breath!

Lori Deschene describes it very well, Practice the pause. Pause before judging. Pause before assuming. Pause before accusing. Pause whenever you’re about to react harshly, and you’ll avoid doing and saying things you’ll later regret.

Tips: When you are in an intense conversation, take a deep breath, pause and think. If you still feel the tension,  retreat and come back another time once you are calm.

4. Saying Thank You!

Expressing gratitude by saying thank you is a simple gesture, yet a powerful impact on other people life and also to your own well being.  Practicing saying thank you to everyone, especially to the people who support you daily.  These kinds words are always appreciated. In return, you receive the positive and happy feeling. The feeling will empower your well-being to be a better person.

5. Make a Commitment!

You need to understand that choosing the right word in a conversation is always a choice. Using the right tone is always a choice. It is the consequence of the choice you cannot choose. You need to make a commitment to express the right positive word. First, you need to do is no complaining anything or anyone, including yourself. Secondly, no gossiping!  Thirdly, no negative thought especially about other people and yourself. Finally, mix with the right group of friends that will empower you. Trust me it will challenge to find the right friends but it is possible. Remember to make it a requirement of yourself. Believe me, you will see the bright side of things with no complaining, no gossiping, and no negative thought. It will positively change your perspective.

What you feed your mind determines your appetite.~Tom Ziglar

You can use the T.H.I.N.K formula below before you begin to speak. As long the answer is Yes for all the following question, then you can voice out your opinion.

T – Is it True?
H – Is it Helpful?
I – Is it Inspiring?
N – Is it Necessary?
K – Is it Kind?

In my previous post, I wrote about the 4 REASONS WHY PEOPLE HAVE THE CANNOT-DO ATTITUDE. Please do check it out! For every setback is a setup for a comeback! Here are the 8 ways to bounce back from failure!

People who succeed develop an attitude of tenacity. They refuse to quit, and they are determined not to let failure defeat them. If you desire to fulfill your dreams, achieve your goals, and live life to the fullest, that is the kind of attitude you need to cultivate. Take responsibility for your failure and learn from it.  You need to choose to respond, not react. Look at failure as a lesson, not a person.

One of the two saddest words in the vocabulary are “if only.” People who get trapped in their whole lives saying “if only.” If only I had tried harder if only I am smarter if only I am rich and if only I am stronger. These words create a victim mindset. To be an achiever, your word needs to change. Substitute it with “next time.” Next time I will try harder, next time I will be smarter, next time I will be rich, and next time I will be stronger. Remember, failure is not a failure if you do better next time.

Let us look at another perspective, you can program your mind to look at failure as learning, growth, and opportunity. It may look like a small difference. However, it can make a big difference. With the right word, it can change your thought process. Start with questions, Why does this learning experience essential for my growth? How can I look at this as an opportunity? What can I learn from this experience so that I can do better next time?

Henry Ford stated, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” For you to do that, you need to learn from your mistake first. From my experience working as an engineer, I have learned more from my failures than my success. I need to take the responsibility and accountability for my mistake. That way, it is my obligation to learn and execute a better solution. With the right choice of attitude, you will never lose, but you will learn.

Robert Kiyosaki

Something you win and something you learn!

Micheal Jordon was one of the top basketball players of his era.  He won 6 NBA championship, and he was awarded six times MVP of the NBA final.  We can see his success, and his name became a brand, JORDAN. However, Micheal Jordan stated, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” What we do not see was his failure. If he gives up, the brand Jordan will never be born.

The great understand the role failure plays in achievement. That is the truth, but not many people have the tolerance to accept that. The inventor, Thomas Edison said, “I’m not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded in another step forward.” Whether it is millions of experiments that do not work or millions of falls from a balance beam, the milestones on the road to success are always the failure. Look at failure as growth! The farther you go, the more failure you experience.

Over time, you have to learn to see failure as a friend and a companion of success. If you`re not failing, then you probably are not A moving forward. You are just doing something safe and comfortable. Then, you will never grow!

They say laughter is the best medicine. It works well when you laugh of your failure. Laughter can change your state of mind into solution mode. Followed by the right question, Why? How? And What? There is no a person alive who would not benefit from a good laugh, especially when you`re doing something foolish. Remember, when you take your mistake too seriously, then everything seems to be life-and-death. If you have that mindset, it will drain you and sabotage you from your potential. The way to solve that is to laugh no matter how bad things get!

If you failed, you could be upset for a day. But today`s failure will not guarantee tomorrow`s failure. Learn and work your weakness. Same goes for success; you can celebrate for a day. But today`s success will not guarantee tomorrow`s success. Learn and improve your strength. Remember, failure is just like success. It is a day to day process. Failure is not a one-time event. It is how you respond to life along the way.  The fact is, you will make mistakes. However, you cannot conclude that you are a failure until you breathe your last. Now! Right now! You are still in the process. As long you are breathing, there is a still time to turn things around!

Failure does not mean you will never succeed. It just means it will take longer. John Wayne line in the movie The Train Robber said, “You`re going to spend the rest of your life getting up more time than you`re knocked down, so you better start getting used to it.” That is what success is about! Japanese Proverb stated, “Fall seven times and stand up eight.” If you give up, you will never know. But if you give up you will never get there at all. All you need to start all again when you fall.

Thomas  J. Watson Sr. the founder of IBM, was once asked how to succeed faster. He replied, ” If you want to succeed faster, you must double your rate of failure. Success lies on the far side of failure” The most crucial part is to respond. Do not ever react! Prepare a recovery plan. The formula always has been “Try, try again and then try again something else.”  An excellent way to start is starting with the right questions.  The great “What if”

Let’s say you are organizing events outdoors. You can ask yourself, “What if it rains?” The next question is, “What is my backup plan?” Should I prepare a tent? Let`s looks at bigger risks. You just bought a house which cost over 500,000USD.  The question you can ask yourself, “What if I am unable to pay the monthly installment?” The next question is “How can I afford the monthly installments?” Do I need to keep an eye on my budget spending? What other ways can I earn income besides my day job? How can I increase my salary? What do I need to get in the company?

Always start with a question to challenge yourself on what could go wrong in your particular tasks, works, projects, assignment and the list goes on. Start with the “What if?” Now, when it happens! Do not run! Take the accountability and immediately take action on your recovery plan. Do not afraid to seek help!

Most of the time, the impact of a recovery plan that leads you to success is sweeter compared to a smooth plan that leads you to success.

Success is not an accident. Failure is also not an accident. Take that jump of your life and follow these steps to bounce back!

The content was taken from the Difference Makerwritten by John C. Maxwell and with a spice of my thought. Definitely, a book to read and highly recommended for those who want to learn to manage their attitude.

They are two type of people in the world; the “CAN” and “CAN`T.” The first type of people can achieve anything. They have the positive mindset and the CAN-do attitude. The second type of people will fail everything. They did not even start, they just say it cannot be done. They see failure in every result. If you are able to handle failure well, you can keep yourself away from the CANNOT-do attitude.

Henry Ford;

If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.

The question is, WHY do people have the CANNOT-do attitude? John C. Maxwell breaks it down to four main reasons;

1. They expect to fail!

Usually, the people who keep failing are the ones who expect to fail. Even before they begin a task, they already see the failure instead of success first. They are like the pessimist whose with a name tag on, “I expected this to fail”. Their mindset was programmed to fail.

The Law of Human Behaviour

Sooner or later We will get what we expect!

2. They take failure personally!

You cannot perform in a manner inconsistent with the way you see yourself. Everybody fails! But if they still continue to fail, they will expect to fail. In the end, they will label themselves as a failure. You need to understand there is a big difference between failing and being a failure.

If you want to maintain a good attitude and be successful, you cannot take your failure or even your success personally.  Failure is not so bad if it does not attack the heart. Success is all right if it does not go to the head. A failure is just an event. Guess what, same goes for success.  It is not a person. As we get older, gain more experience and gain more confident, you will realise that your failures are temporary and your successes do not define you completely as well.

3. They afraid to jump!

You have to jump to start living! If you don’t jump, you’re just existing.

To live life, you need to take some degree of risk! The fear of failure can sabotage a person. The fear of failure is deadweight of your potential. They will miss the great opportunity to win and achieve greatness!

Those who always jump first will get out on the edge of the comfort zone. That is the only way you will seize the opportunity. If you want to grow, you must embrace pain. If you want to unlock your potential, you will need to take chances and jump!  If you do not make that jump, you just existing in life! You choose!

 4. They let failure define them!

Losing and winning are given event in life. Just because you lose today, it will NOT guarantee that you will lose tomorrow. But if you quit, it will guarantee that you will lose tomorrow! Whatever you do, do not every quite! However, you must prepare yourselves for failure. You should be ready to bounce back when it occur. That is what make the success worth it! Success without adversity is not a success.

Steve Davis

It may not be your fault for being down, but it is your fault for not getting up!
